Over the years certain Gifted creatures have developed into their own species and been recorded in the Castle archives as fauna and flora of the island. Here are a few of these creatures.
Wyrvens
Known for their foul temperaments wyrvens will eat anything they see. Poor vision though means they only recognize prey by the fact it is moving so when confronting one it is best to stay still. With two legs, a long tail, and a pair of wings they are notably different from dragons in that they lack frontal legs. Usually nest in the East, attempts to domesticate horrible failures sometimes costing lives. When young they about the size of large dogs, they quickly grow and the largest wyrven recorded was over 30ft from tail to snout.
Elemental Birds
Special birds with elemental powers, the most famous and noticeable being the fire bird, also known as phoenixes. There are ones for the other elements not all known by individual names though the Earth element one is what we would call a Roc or giant eagle. Can be domesticated though would not make great pets since elemental birds do not have control on their powers and grow very large needing space and exercise. Some of these have been captured by the Castle mews and have reproduced though reproduction rates are low so very few live in the mews.
Serpents
Serpents are different from the regular snake usually in at least one key way, they are massive. Similar to the Sea Serpent of legend they are just called Serpents since they are not limited to the sea, some have been seen with wings and can fly like the amphithere while others have multiple heads like the hydra. No powers and very hard to domesticate though some water Serpents living in Lake Abluo have become tame after years of feeding on the Castle garbage dumped into the lake and have no fear nor hostility toward humans. Occasionally Serpent eggs have been found and hatched in the past but loyalty was never strong in any of them nor an ability to easily be trained.
Griffins
The largest success in domestication of the native fauna has been with these feline bird hybrids especially the subspecies called the Kitfin because instead of being part big cat it is part domesticated cat and only a little larger than one with similar behavior. The larger species is not so docile and while they can be trained to become very loyal the training process can be dangerous and fail unless handled carefully or from hatching. A few of these have been taken in by the mews with better success than any of the other native fauna.
Man Eating Plants
Huge plants with beautiful flowers giving off a sweet perfume they detect their prey by vibrations in the ground reaching their roots and when close enough the wines of the species which were carefully arranged to look casual and natural come to life and ensnare the victim, wrapping it up like a spider and then pulling it to see the head of plant. No one has seen what the head looks like, well no one who came back to tell. Very dangerous plants to be avoided at all costs. Pollen of the flowers can become a powerful tranquilizer and petals are edible and full of nutrients and the vines when broken open contain sweet water in them perfectly safe to drink.
Dragons
One of the most powerful and largest species on the island dragons range all over the four regions. They have various powers, appearances, and habits. Have been known to attack and eat humans, dangerous and advised to avoid conflict with.
Unicorns
Looking like horses they vary a little in size from petite creatures to huge strong ones. They can be recognized by a single horn coming out of their foreheads. Some of these have powers which deal with healing and purification. They are wild creatures though and do not take kindly to human encroachment onto their territories and have been known to impale people on their horns. Strangely though they take a softer attitude toward children and will even allow them to ride on their back. Unicorns are only found in the Western Region.
More to come.
