Name: Ion Hopkins-Arroyo
Age: 8
Gender: Male
Role: Non-gifted
Appearance: Ion has dark hair and eyes. He is tall for his age and skinny, and is fairly athletic. He has olive skin, thanks to his Spanish heritage from his mother, and his skin is further tanned because he is always outside. He usually just wears shorts while playing outside, and usually only puts on a shirt if someone nags him about it. He dislikes wearing shoes, and will at best put on sandals if he has to do work.
Personality: Ion is mischievous, easy-going, and energetic. He loves playing sports and running around, and hates sitting still. He doesn’t mind doing work, as long as it isn’t something boring like cleaning. He is extremely talkative and speaks his mind often, though it usually gets him into trouble and many people find him annoying. He’s not above playing tricks or breaking rules set by other villagers, but tends to show a little caution when dealing with the gifted. He stretches the truth a lot, but refuses to acknowledge his stories as lies. He exaggerates and puts his own spin on things, but will be more truthful if the matter is serious. He is somewhat forgetful and will often get distracted from his work, which gets him into trouble fairly often.
He has yet to realize that his situation in life is unfair. He knows that some people had powers and some people- like him- didn't, and that some people- like him- have to do work, but he never put two and two together. When he was younger, he often tried to play with some of the gifted children, but as they grew older, they started treating him differently, until he was told that they couldn't truly be friends. While this realization hurt him, he hasn't yet accepted it as a fact of life.
History: His mother was a newcomer, while his father was a second-generation island-born gifted. His mother's family is from the Basque and Andalusia regions of Spain. Ion can understand fluent Spanish, but doesn't speak it as often as his father prefers him to use English. His father claims that he doesn’t know his exact ancestry, as it isn’t very important on the island.
Both parents were disappointed that their son had no powers. His mother was only disappointed that her son would not get the benefits of castle life, and treated him no differently than she would if he had powers. His father was more conflicted, and couldn’t completely ignore the values he learned from his upbringing. While he doesn’t consider his son a disgrace, he distances himself from the boy. Ion’s father is nervous now that his wife is pregnant again, and hopes that the new child will be gifted.
Ion spends most of his time out of the house, usually just playing and shirking off his work. He occasionally doesn’t come home at nights, usually accidentally falling asleep outside or in some new hiding place he found. His father tends to worry for his son when this happens, while his mother writes it off as normal behavior for a young boy and only goes looking for him if it’s been more than 24 hours.
